A Few Fun Facts to Sip On
Because what’s a Champagne celebration without a bit of sparkle trivia?
Champagne must come from the Champagne region of France — no exceptions.
The pressure inside a Champagne bottle is often comparable to a double-decker bus tyre — that’s why the cork can pop so dramatically.
A charming piece of history: the “muselet” (the wire cage that keeps the cork in place) was invented in 1844 by Adolphe Jaquesson — before that, bottles occasionally exploded.
Also: Champagne was once dubbed “Le Vin du Diable” (“the Devil’s Wine”) because bottles would burst under pressure — early producers considered the bubbles a fault!
And more recently: in 2015, the Champagne hillsides, houses, and cellars were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrating the region’s cultural landscapes.
